Realme GT5PRO Push Strategy Guide

The most commonly used Android push services in China are Huawei and Xiaomi's push services. The installation process is similar. Since I have a Huawei account, I installed HMS push and FCM push for international apps.

HMSPush#

Huawei Push (HMSPush) is a commonly used push service that most apps integrate, except for WeChat.

Preparation#

  • HMS Core (download from Coolapk)
  • HMSPush (LSPosed module)
  • Huawei AppGallery app
  • LSPosed + Magisk
  • Scene (optional, converts HMS Core into a system app)
  • libChecker app (optional, checks if apps are compatible with Huawei push)

Configuration Steps#

  1. Download and install HMS Core and Huawei AppGallery. It's recommended to update apps from Huawei AppGallery, as different channels may use different push services.
  2. Install HMSPush and enable the module in LSPosed. Check the system framework and HMS Core in the recommended apps.
  3. In LSPosed, select the apps that need to use HMSPush for push notifications. This step is mainly to disguise the apps as Huawei devices. If using other tools for disguise, you can skip this configuration.
  4. After configuring the scope, restart the phone.
  5. After restarting, open hmspush.apk or open the module in LSPosed. You should be able to see the apps that need to be pushed, but they are still in an unregistered state. Restart the apps one or two times to register them.
  6. After successful registration, kill the app in the background and disable auto-start permissions to start receiving push notifications. You can use QQ for push notifications, but remember to enable system notifications, otherwise, the notifications won't pop up.
  7. (Optional) Use Scene to convert HMS Core into a system app. This can fix the bug where clicking on notifications doesn't open the app. If you have experience, you can also disable unnecessary activities in HMS Core, but from my usage, it doesn't consume much battery, so you can ignore it.

FCM Push#

We know that most international apps do not support Huawei push. However, besides HMSPush, if you can establish a stable connection to mtalk.google.com, you can also use FCM for push notifications.

FCM push is different from HMSPush. FCM requires the app itself to be in the background to receive push notifications. Most apps are already in the background and can push notifications by themselves. Therefore, FCM is more suitable for occasionally launched apps, such as Outlook and Gmail. Although WeChat can also receive push notifications, it is not recommended because the frequency of notifications is high and it's better to let WeChat handle the push notifications in the background.

Preparation#

Configuration Steps#

  1. In many parts of China, FCM services can be connected but are not stable, resulting in issues like unstable connections and delayed or missed push notifications. There are three main ways to address this:
    1. Directly connect to FCM. This is possible in Guangdong province.
    2. Modify the hosts file to allow FCM connections. The following domain names are important. If you have 5G, you can use IPv6 for the connection.
    3. Use a proxy for the following domain names.
    4. Dial *#*#426#*#* on the dial pad to check the connection status. Most connections are not stable.
mtalk.google.com
alt1-mtal.google.com
alt[2-8]-mtal.google.com #alt2-alt8 can all be configured
  1. Install FCM Fix and in LSPosed, select System Framework and Google Play Services in the FCM Fix module.
  2. Open the FCM Fix module and select the modules that support FCM push. The module will remind you which apps support FCM.
  3. Grant auto-start permission to the apps that support FCM push. The FCM Fix module simulates a background process for the app. When an FCM push notification arrives, it will wake up the app to deliver the notification. If the app doesn't have auto-start permission, FCM Fix won't be able to wake up the app.
  4. Restart the phone.

Disadvantages of FCM Push#

As we can see, FCM push requires the app to be in the background. Unless the app supports GMS push, most apps don't meet this requirement. With the FCM Fix module, we can achieve push notifications without the app being in the background, but the app needs to have auto-start permission. FCM Fix simulates a background process for the app. When an FCM push notification arrives, FCM Fix wakes up the app to deliver the notification. Therefore, FCM push is not suitable for apps that require a large number of push notifications in a short period of time or for a long time, such as WeChat. It is more suitable for occasionally pushed apps that don't need to be in the background for a long time but still want to receive notifications in a timely manner, such as email apps.

Enjoy!#

Installing push services on Android is really far behind iOS, but this is not Android's fault. It's mainly because Android is not dominant enough.
